Research notes
The Apollo 11 spacecraft was composed of the Command/Service Module (CSM) and the Lunar Module (LM), with the CSM serving as the primary spacecraft in orbit around the Moon at 3500 to 3700 km/h and the LM being the vehicle that landed on the lunar surface. The LM separated from the CSM with the descent stage firing its engines to lower the module progressively slower to the lunar surface. After the moonwalk, the ascent stage reached 2000 to 3000 km/h to escape the Moon’s gravity and return to the orbiting CSM.
